Citizens Band's Initial Season
The Citizens Band performed its first public concert at the SSCD Lawn Festival on August 2nd, 2014. And, in what seemed somehow fitting, the band had to race to perform its tribute to the original Citizens Band by playing a piece they performed, "The Storm King", before a real storm rained upon us.
In season, the band rehearses regularly on Tuesday evenings at the Punxsutawney Middle School Band Room.
The season begins after Groundhog's Day, and ends in the month of November.
The Community Band of Punxsutawney
The borough of Punxsutawney has a long history with community bands. Some Punxsutawney residents joined the band of the Wildcat Regiment to fight in the Civil War. And, there have been a number of bands that were formed, flourished and disbanded since.
A partial list of Punxsutawney Bands, that were in existence before 1900 include the Punxsutawney Band, the Punxsutawney Silver Cornet Band, Lindsey Brass Band, Punxsutawney Martial Band, Keystone Band, Boy's Band, Marchand Band, Big Run Band, and the Walston Band.
Brookville, Reynoldsville, Canoe Creek, Mahaffey, Falls Creek, Luthersburg, Cool Spring, Knoxdale, Brockwayville, Ridge, Mountain City, Paradise, DuBois, Perrysville, and Rathmel all had bands that would visit Punxsutawney in the 19th Century.
And, to honor that tradition, our new band will take the name of a band that was formed in 1903 - The Citizens Band of Punxsutawney.
